(started making this when i was a teen-ager)
2 pkgs. Yeast 3 slightly beaten eggs, at
2 c. warm water room temperature
7 T. sugar 6-7 c. flour
4 tsp. salt 1 egg, set aside for glaze
¼ c. salad oil
Soften yeast in water. Add rest of ingredients, except flour. Mix. Add 4 cups of flour and mix well. Add more flour to make workable dough. Knead until smooth and elastic. Turn into oiled bowl and cover. Let rise until doubled. Punch down. Divide dough in half. Cut each half into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a strip about 15” long. Place 3 strips on greased baking sheet. Braid, fastening strips securely at both ends. Repeat with second half of dough. Cover, let rise again until doubled. Brush top and sides with slightly beaten egg. Sprinkle with sesame seeds (or poppy seeds). Bake in 325 – 350 oven for 30-40 minutes. Makes 2 loaves.
