A place for embroidery people to meet

I just got my order of 166 spools of Metro thread and was wondering how the rest of you stored it? I have a wall mounted wooden spool rack - but the base of the spools are to wide and it's to hard to get the spools on and off.

***TIP***
Here's a secret about Metro thread that you may not know - if you pull on the base of the spool it pops out and if you wind the thread around the notch and pop it back shut it holds the thread in place. :)

This past week, Staples had those plastic drawers in a plastic frame on sale for 1/2 off. Many places such as WalMart and Aldi sell these at sale prices. The large drawers are just right for the 5500 yd. spools, and the small drawers are right for the 1100 yd. spools. Hancocks sells wooden racks for serger thread which will also work. I am using both systems. Just got my 50 new colors from Metro this week. The names for the new colors will be out at the end of Jan.

Thanks, I've was trying to get all the colors entered in the Metro conversion software and I like it better when they have names. Hopefully they'll have ungraded the software to include the new colors shortly.

Hi I also have Metro Thread. I just ordered the new color set. I have had pretty good luck with it. And for the price you CANNOT beat it. The colors are great. I made a holder for mine but with the new colors coming in I will have to make another. I belong to a local embroidery club that meets once a month and take all my colors with me. I had to make something to carry all my spools I got the three drawer plastic organizer like they sell at walmart. I got mine at Joann's when they had them for 50% off. I took the plastic canvas for cross stitching (?) the sell in the craft dept and made dividers for each drawer. You cut strips to fit inbetween the spools to keep them standing upright in the drawers. You make cuts in the strips to interlock them. Can't discribe it in detail, hope you can figure that part out. I then cut two holes in the top with a VERY sharp blade and added a handle. Any kind will do. I used one I kept from a cardboard box handle. Then cut a inch long hole in each drawer handle to run a stip of velcro through. Measure a strip of velcro long enough to run from the underside of the frame to a couple inches over the top. Staple gun the "soft" part of the velcro strap to the underside of the frame. This is kinda hard to do, but can be done You have to use an electric one and press really hard to go through the plastic. Staple a piece of the other half, the "grabby" part, to the top so the straps stick together. Run the strap through the holes and press. This keeps the drawers from coming open when you move it. If you don't plan on moving it you wouldn't need to do the handle or the strap. Keeps the thread out of the light and dust free. I have used mine for about a year now and works great. Hope this gives you some ideas.

metro threads sales a nice wooden box to store your threads in, You can get them stained or natural finish. I got my natural. They stack nicely, you can label your drawers so you know what colors are in it. They keep them from light and fading your thread, plus the dust and tangles are not a problem

Metro is cheaper only 5500 for $2.25.. You might want to look into it, less than half the price for 500meters more!

I bought the 3 drawer type at Walmart, but I'm not happy with them. They wooble when you pull the drawers out. I can't see the last back two rows of thread so have to take the drawer completely out to see them. It's ok for now but I'm not thrilled after spending $14.00 on them. Guess I'll just have to keep looking.

I also have the plastic three draw organizer from walmart. I am not happy with it either but i do like the idea of using the plastic to make dividers. I was thinking of using a piece of peg board with little pegs to hold them in place but worry the added height of the peg board would make them to tall to shut the drawer. I find that the drawers pull out hard and don't always shut all the way. I also have them stacked which seems to make the bottom drawers too tight. When i get my sewing room built I plan on looking in the kitchen cupboard supplies for drawers and cupboards to store things.

O.K. another question, how do you mark the spools as far as color number wise? You have to take the sticker off the top in order to put it on the spindle of the embroidery machine. So I've been peeling that off and sticking it to the bottom on the inside edge. But that doesn't do me any good if I'm trying to find a certain color # and no way to tell unless I pull each one out and look at the bottom.

I've been thinking maybe I've have to buy some quilting template plastic and write the # on top and lay that over the top of the spools. Any other suggestions?
